FAQs

We use a self-rating system and won’t dictate which division you initially play in or go crazy trying to figure out what your rating is. But, we will automatically move you if your match performance meets the ‘Promotion and Relegation’ criteria below. Do your best to honestly place yourself in a group where matches are fun for both players. You can also ask to be moved at any time.

Here are some general guidelines to help you find a starting point. If you are unsure, start at a lower level and go from there. We can always move you around at your request.

  • 3.0 – This player is starting to get some consistency when hitting medium-paced shots but is not comfortable with all strokes and lacks execution when trying for directional control, depth or power. Serves are inconsistent and double faults are common. Check out a demo USTA video.
  • 3.5 – This player has achieved improved stroke dependability with directional control on moderate shots but still lacks depth and variety. This player exhibits some net play and has improved court coverage. Serves are still inconsistent and lack pace and placement. Check out a demo USTA video.
  • 4.0+ – This player has dependable strokes (on most days 😀), including directional control and depth on both forehand and backhand sides on moderate shots, plus the ability to use lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys with some success. Rallies may be lost due to impatience. Automatic Promotion and Relegation Based on Match Performance.

Relegation:

This happens when a player loses more than 75% of the games played in back-to-back matches against two different opponents.

Example:

  • Match 1: 6-2, 6-1 (Lost 80% of games played)
  • Match 2: 6-0, 6-1 (Lost 92% of games played)

Promotion:

Same logic applies for a player who wins at least 75% of the games in back-to-back matches against two different opponents.
